Over recent weeks there has been an increase in reports of thefts and non dwelling burglaries within the Zouch Estate, Tidworth. Officers are investigating six similar incidents which have occurred since late December 2011.

The offenders are targeting communal hallways and garden sheds and have taken bicycles, mini motos and fishing equipment.

PCSO Mike Tryhorn said: "In many of these incidents the property has been left unsecure and the offenders will have had very little difficulty in removing the items. I would like to appeal for residents to review their security, the Tidworth Neighbourhood Policing Team would be happy to advise people on improvements and preventative measures.

It is also important that people contact us with any information which may help to identify those responsible and report suspicious activity so we can stop other members of the community becoming victims. All calls will be treated confidentially."

Security advice:

·        The door, doorframe and walls of your shed should be in good repair.

·        Consider lining the shed with plywood sheeting.

·        Gravel used for paths in the garden and around the shed are a good deterrent due to the noise created when walking over it.

·        Door hinges, hasps and staples should be secured with threaded coach bolts and back plates.  Many hasps are easily wrenched free if this is not done.

·        Use a good quality close shackle padlock to secure your shed.

·        If you have a window in your shed and need the light, fit wire mesh or bars to the inside of the window.  If the light is not needed board it up.

·        Clearly mark all your property with your house number or post code in bright coloured paint.

·        The serial numbers of all items should be collected and registered with Immobilise.com, the free national property register.

 ·        Chain smaller tools through their handles to large heavy items such as lawn mowers.

·        Check that you have the correct insurance cover for the items contained in your shed.

·        If you see anyone acting suspiciously call the police.

Anyone with information should contact PCSO Tryhorn on 101 or Crimestoppers 0800 555 111.
