We have been informed that Pete Ellement, presenter of "Big Band Sound" on Castledown Radio, passed away on 4th December, in the early hours of the morning.
Pete was born in Bournemouth and went to the local school where he studied violin for nearly 5 years. While working for Post Office Telephones in 1968 he joined with 4 other members of staff to form the Post Office Rhythm Club.
He co-organized the Bournemouth Big Band Enthusiasts, Bournemouth Easy Listening Society and Kinson Rhythm and Swing which is a continuation of the Post Office Rhythm Club.
Pete's weekly Big Band show was heard up and down the South Coast on many Community Radio stations. Fellow broadcaster Chris Walker said, "Pete was a huge big band enthusiast and broadcaster and will be sadly missed by the local live music fraternity".
I personally only met Pete once, when he came to a meeting of the volunteers at Castledown Radio. Not recognising Pete from his photograph, he said "surely you recognize me from my voice". And I did, instantly.
I am sure I join with everyone that knew Pete and all our listeners, in passing our condolences to his wife June and his family.
As a tribute to Pete Ellement his last recorded show will be transmitted at 6pm on Sunday 5th December.
John Sparrow
Chairman, Castledown Radio Volunteers Group.
