TIDWORTH AREA COMMUNITY AWARDS 2009
For many years Castledown Radio has supported the Tidworth Area Community Awards.
We are the only radio station to cover Tidworth Area Community Awards and we are pleased to bring you exclusive coverage of this event, in a special 1-hour programme. You can listen to the programme by tuning in to 104.7fm on Wednesday 31st March at 5pm. Or tune in to hear the repeat on Saturday 01st April at 5pm.
This year’s Awards ceremony took place on Thursday 18th March at a new venue - the Ludgershall Sports And Social Club - and the evening was presented by the Lord Lieutenant of Wiltshire, Mr. John Bush OBE. Choirs from the local primary schools and also the Fijian community, performed folk songs and popular music, giving the event a further sense of occasion.

R Edwards Dick Edwards was chair of the Neighbourhood Link Scheme when it was set up several years ago and then stood down as chair and took on the task of co-ordinator. This entails Dick receiving requests for jobs of a varying nature to be done, mostly driving people to and from appointments etc and find ing volunteers to do it. He also often drives as well.
He is also Chair of Governors at Zouch Primary School - governors are volunteers who are called upon to assist the Head with the running of the school - keeping educational standards high, dealing with staffing matters, and just being there at numerous functions throughout the school year.
In the Collingbournes we have a village magazine called the Courier and Dick not only proof reads this but also organises the distribution of the magazine in Ducis to those volunteers who deliver it through the letterboxes each month. Dick is a keen gardener and as such has been a leading light in the Collingbournes and Everleigh Gardening Club.
And lastly Dick is very active in our church. Apart from aiding his dear wife, our vicar, he regularly cleans, reads, makes soup for the Lent lunches and brews up the most welcoming mulled wine for all our Christmas services. The Collingbournes are very lucky to have someone like Dick Edwards as he always seems to be there when you need him, and gets on with the job. He is the archetypal community helper and deserves an award for all he does.

Drumbeat's civilian postmen Brenda Haskins, Luke and Matthew Bates, Sarah and Ben Wooller, Sam Sheridan and Luke Storton deliver the Drumbeat to civilian houses in Tidworth and Perham Down. This stalwart band of residents has been delivering Drumbeat for quite a while, with very little recompense or recognition. Some of them have been doing it for longer than others, but a characteristic which they share is ‘community spirit'. Following the demise of TDT last year, these nominees demonstrated a highly commendable community spirit, volunteering to continue delivering, without payment, until Tidworth Town Council stepped in to fill the financial breach. With two new volunteers the delivery team is up to strength, braving all weathers to deliver Drumbeat.

The staff of the Castle Practice, Ludgershall For their courtesy and dedication, in particular over the adverse weather conditions when many elderly required attention. One nurse walked her rounds taking blood samples, etc. When so many others failed to get to work, they were the tops.

Stanley Bagwell Since joining Enford Parish Council some years ago, he has taken on the task of making our roads safer. He has lobbied for, and in August 2008, succeeded in starting the pilot Community Speed Watch in Wiltshire. He runs this very successfully. He has also helped other parishes up and down the Avon Valley to get their own Speed Watch.
Stanley is also very active in all matters relating to road safety and the condition of local roads. He co-ordinates such matters on behalf of the Pewsey Area (which takes in several villages on the A345 and A342). He has kept accurate statistics, backed up with dates and photographs of road traffic accidents in the local area (which does not reflect official statistics, which are much lower). He uses this information to lobby Wiltshire Council, Area Boards, Wiltshire Highways and the Police Service to get things done, for example road signs and repairs. He has also been instrumental in getting extra bus stops installed in the areas where school children were using the buses to get to school. Stanley has achieved results in road safety due to his long campaign.

Sgt Dave Harkill & Marianne Edmunds Dave and Marianne run the Shipton Bellinger RAMs Under 11 football team. Dave does the coaching and Marianne does the administration and fixtures. The team involves around 15 children from the local areas. They put a huge amount of time and effort into the team which allows the children the opportunity to play football in a highly competitive league. This is particularly important in garrison areas as it allows children to settle in quickly and find new friends. Furthermore, the physical training helps keep the children healthy and off the streets or the Playstation. The Team spirit also gives the children a wider sense of community and belonging whilst also improving their confidence. The children have all benefited enormously and they deserve recognition for their efforts.

Mrs Maggie Butler - Maggie has been involved with our newsletter, serving Netheravon, Fittleton and Haxton, with a group of enthusiastic helpers for over 24 years. She does this voluntarily and acts as editor and focus for all submissions. She spends a lot of her free time co-ordinating the issue each month and canvassing for advertising revenue to keep the magazine account solvent. The only additional cash is an annual donation from the two parishes she serves. Her monthly newsletter is eagerly awaited by our parishioners; many of them are elderly pensioners who live alone in our very small village with little or no contact with the community. This enable them to feel less isolated by letting them know the local news and helps them feel part of the community.
Her valuable service to our community is greatly appreciated by everyone and they take every opportunity to let her know how they feel. This public spirited endeavour needs to be recognised in the wider community.

Rick Young Rick has been a presenter on Castledown Radio for several years. He presents the morning show and trains volunteers in radio production. He also trains students from the Academy to produce their own shows as part of the Radio Club. A number of students have gone on to present their own regular shows. Rick also mentors a number of volunteers at the station, guiding them in their professional development and is responsible for some of the everyday administration of the station.
Following the loss of backing from TDT and despite his own problems, Rick continued to serve the station and ensure its continued high standards, working for months without reward and uncertainty over the station's future. He continued to train and mentor presenters and plan future programmes and schedules.
Wellington Academy has taken over the responsibility for the Radio Station and is now directly employed as a presenter and media technician. He is now working on long-term future plans for the station and working with the Station Manager and the Academy's Media department to further improve the station and open up more opportunities to experience work in a radio station for students at the Academy and the wider population.

Mike Winterbourne Mike joined TDT in 2003 as a Community Development Worker for the wider Tidworth Community Area. What he lacked in experience of community work, he more than made up in his enthusiasm and capacity to learn and become involved. His local knowledge and contacts proved invaluable. His involvement in Ludgershall in Bloom, Blue Light Day, Castledown Radio, Pulse, Residents' Fora, Tidworth Festival, skateboard projects and latterly running training courses was always 110%, well over the requirements of the job and always with enthusiasm and a lively sense of humour.

CSgt Strawbridge CSgt Strawbridge has served with the Regiment for 22 years, for the past seven years he has ebb fully committed as the welfare SNCO. A welfare SNCO post within an infantry regiment is very demanding, especially when the Battalion deploy on operations. Csgt Strawbridge works hand in glove with Wiltshire local authority on a daily basis and without his knowledge, drive and enthusiasm the 2 Royal Welsh welfare team would have struggled. He has prevented 2 children being taken into care by engaging well before things got out of hand, has helped re-house estranged wives on more than 6 occasions and constantly volunteers to assist families.

The team consisted of 25 women and 6 brave men who between them walked the 140 miles from the 2RRW parade square to the Children's Hospice in Wales over 2 days.
